We’ve recently been working with local theatrical company, The Lincoln Offshoots, to produce some photographs of rehearsals for their upcoming show at The Drill Hall in Lincoln.
Photographing theatrical productions is not new to us – we previously worked with The Lincoln Young Company to provide photos of their show, ‘I’m Spilling My Heart Out Here’; a show which was later performed at the National Theatre – but each performance always bring a unique and exciting set of challenges.
This latest show is a production is of Tom Stoppard’s ‘Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead’. The play follows two courtiers, minor characters in ‘Hamlet’, and features their escapades in parallel to Shakespeare’s text, briefly intersecting with some of the original scenes. The show is genuinely funny whilst retaining all seriousness where appropriate.
When photographing rehearsals we wanted to capture the characters and emotions within the play, showing both the landscape of the scenes and the intricate details and expressions the actors use to tell their story. Trying to convey the feelings of 2 hours of storytelling in each photograph is always an exciting challenge.
We also wanted to give a sense of what goes on behind the scenes, before the curtains rise and after they fall and to show the ‘real’ people behind The Lincoln Offshoots who’ve been working tirelessly for the past few months to bring this show to life.
